Why plug shapes vary by country
There are 16 different power-plug standards in use around the world, named Type A through Type O. They differ in pin shape, pin spacing, and grounding scheme — which means a plug from one country usually will not fit a wall socket in another. On top of that, mains voltage runs at either ~110–127 V (North America, Japan, parts of the Caribbean) or ~220–240 V (most of the rest of the world), and at either 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
Most modern phones, laptops, and camera chargers are dual-voltage (100–240 V) so a simple plug-shape adapter is enough. Hair dryers, kettles, electric razors, and similar resistive-load appliances usually are not — bringing one from a 110 V country to a 220 V country, or vice versa, will damage it unless you use a voltage converter.
